edit: Upon closer inspection by Simrun and Daniel, it appears that the two so-called contacts at the bottom actually do not control the shutter. This was confirmed when we took a photo by pressing the button, even though the top wasn’t touching the bottom. There are two screws fastening what we think is a simple push-clicky-button to the plastic case. We’ll unscrew those and have a further look soon.

After my colleagues managed to butcher my camera (Canon Powershot A80), I pried the top off to see what constitutes the shutter mechanism. To do this, you have to remove the screws on the sides of the camera, inside the battery holder and inside the CompactFlash card section. The top of the camera comes off easily enough (be careful not to touch the capacitor!). It appears that there are two contacts which we are concerned with:

The next step is to solder two wires to that thing then put it back together – we will be doing this tomorrow.
